San Diego Bike Commuter Discount Program

I created a program called the San Diego Bike Commuter Discount Program. It's a very simple program, you simply ride your bike to a business and they give you a discount with no questions asked. No membership card, no secret handshake -- just show up on your bike.

Right now the program has a really solid list of high profile businesses that signed onto this program. Once we're live the businesses on the program will grow exponentially. I'm only allowing local and independent businesses to partake in this.

How does this help cycling? This helps boost your everyday cyclists doing errands. Now people will have a clear motivation to ride their bike to the local restaurant, bar, video shop or whatever. Part of this program is my working with the cities to get more (MUCH MORE) bike racks in front of businesses. South Park is already working hard on it as is North Park. Expect to see bike racks popping up everywhere.

How does this help business? Businesses can see lots of improvements. Now people have more motivated to go to an independent business over the big box business. Say you have a restaurant, nothing draws a crowd like a crowd but in most businesses you can't see all the people inside. Well, a bike rack full of bikes says to passers by this restaurant is popular, hip, young and green. In Portland businesses fight over the right to have bike corral parking because it's proven a winning strategy. Another huge plus is with all the cyclists going to the business you are freeing up loads of parking spots for drivers. A huge problem for businesses in Uptown and Downtown is the lack of car parking spots and i believe this is the best way possible to alleviate this issue. More people means more money.

How can you help? You can help spread the word with the public but I REALLY need you help when it comes to getting businesses on board with the program. For every business that you want a discount see if you can talk them into the program. Tell them all of their competitors are doing this.

I expect this program to be very large as it's proven to be a success at the businesses that have already signed onto the program in faith. These businesses are Alchemy, Sea Rocket, Blind Lady, Pearl Hotel and restaurant, Station Tavern, and Whistle Stop bar. I want to get tons more businesses on board and at that point i will do an all out advertising campaign in papers and on TV as the final push to get non-cyclists up to speed with the program.

Here is the wood sign and logo you want to look for in front of businesses:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VW9ftAi9vWc&feature=email

Hello, my name is Sky and wanted to start this forum to bring bike commuters together. I felt that new and experienced bike commuters needed a place where they could talk about routes, advocacy and gear. Bike commuting as many of you know is not as easy as just putting a bag on a bike. There's a lot of trial and error that goes into getting the correct route, the correct clothes, the correct bike, the correct bike fit and so on. So here you go, lets make this forum great and with any luck at all we can talk more and more people into joining this form of transportation!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rules

1) This is not a place for Spam. Do not advertise here or else your thread will be removed.

2) Please be polite on this forum. Internet fights are stupid and don't belong here. Check your attitudes at the door.

3) Please use the "Whisper" function for conversations that the rest of the forum doesn't need to read. This will keep the forum clean and precise.

4) Please post your new threads in the correct category.

5) Don't be a lurker! Contribute and help SD with it's bike culture!

What happens if you do stupid things on the forum?
First Offence = warning
Second Offence = you will be assigned "Probation" status for all to see
Third Offence = you will be banned forever.
If the offense is large enough Moderators reserve the right to skip steps or skip all the steps if the offense is big enough!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Loading photos: You need to go to have your photos hosted before posting them. WWW.Photobucket.com is a good site to do this. The accounts there are free and it's easy to use.

Load your photos onto Photobucket.
Copy the line that says "HTML CODE" and bring that code to this site.
Paste that code here
Click the "HTML" button below the dialog box (see it? it's above the smiley faces).
from there you should be good.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Loading videos:
For Youtube videos select html format at the bottom of the comment box and then user the following syntax
<a href="youtubeurl">" put whatever title of the vid you want in this section"</a>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to install a link:
-To make a link look for the series of small text boxes above the dialog box.
-Then click on the one that says [link].
-a small window will appear and this is where you will paste in your link and click "OK".
-now your link will appear in the dialog box.
-at this point name your link something like "check out this stupid ebay auction".
-After you type in the name of the link go back up and click on the [link] button again and you are set!
-Oh, and be sure that HTML button is clicked at the bottom of the page above the smiley faces.

it will end up looking like this:
<a href="http://sdbikecommuter.com">Best damn commuter site out there!</a>

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please Whisper a moderator with any questions.

North County Cyclists now have their own "Tag-o-Rama" game!

Thanks to Alan for showing us how bicyclists do this in Pittsburgh (their Tag-o-Rama thread which is only six months old has almost 2,000 posts and 40 pages!). We borrowed some of the structure we are using from fellow Pittsburgh cyclists, who in turn took inspiration from similar Tag-o-rama games done by MC and cyclist groups in PA, OH, VA and elsewhere

A tag isn't really an actual tag - it is just a picture of your bike in an interesting or well-known location, perhaps with some hints if you think seekers need it. The photo has to be current, and the "post" photo has to be taken after the "find" photo! Members here will figure out where the tag is, and go out to take a picture in the same location, with their own bike in a similar position. The finder is then the new "it", and he gets to place the next tag: Continue ad infinitum!

For now, check out the rules:

#1: If you're "it", find somewhere relatively easy to place a tag - the game is about getting people out on their bikes (see #2),
not about Googling: Somewhere scenic, well known or for some reason special or interesting will do.
Take a picture (no file or recycled photos, or Google Street View, allowed - again, this is about riding your bike!) of your bike in the tag location.
Post on SD BIkecommuter.com (you will need an account with a hosting site such as Photobucket, Picasa or Flickr to host your photo).

#2 The first finder (the one who posts a picture of his bike in the correct location) is the new "it", If you are not first (you have been "Bruced"!), post your photo, anyways (see #3).

#3: As "it", you have 48 hours to place a new tag. If you don't, the honor of being "it" transfers to the second finder/poster.
In short, if you don't have the time or inclination to place a tag, don't grab it in the first place!

#4: You need to ride your bicycle to and fro, and include it in your tag photo!

#5: To keep the tag moving, please limit yourself to South of Camp Pendleton, West of I-5, North of Carmel Valley Road
Since there are only a handful of bike commuters in north county, please keep "tags" close to the PCH area.

#5: No whining!

#6 (edit): The photo needs to be physically posted to the board - a URL to it is not sufficient for a catch.

Get it? If not, check out the Pittsburgh thread for how it is done, and then ask here!

Since items in the local news RE bicycling, bicycles, bicyclists seem to come up periodically, let's have one thread to talk about them rather than starting a new one every time. These two items from the U-T today are what prompted this.

Woman injured in pedicab fall is brain dead.

AND

Bicyclist found dead

In the first case, I'm really wondering what the pedicab driver could have done (the story says "swerving") and *why for god's sake* to make this woman fall out and get injured so severely. And if it's determined that the driver is at fault, I seriously hope that he/she is treated just the same as any taxi driver who caused the death of a passenger. EDIT: the SDNN blurb says the driver "made a sudden move", which sounds like there were other circumstances in play, like traffic or road conditions, while the U-T story says "began swerving back and forth" which to my eye (ear?) would imply intentional carelessness. It will be interesting to see what comes out in the wash.

In the second, notice the mention that the mysteriously dead bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. Gah! Where in the "story" (which is really just a "newsblog" entry) does it suggest that this would have made any difference? The man was riding on a path, apparently alone, and suddenly his bike is crashed and he's dead, and the only thing anyone can think to say is "he wasn't wearing a helmet" so it must have by extension been somehow his fault? What?!?!

This year, I don't think they do.

For those of us without cable service, are there any TV stations that provide TdF coverage this year?

You've seen them "bent riders" on the road. Weird looking, eh? -----ADD other Ergonomic Contraptions on this thread however weird looking-----

Even though I've only started riding the Cruzbike just recently, I am still amazed how comfortable it is on very long rides. No sore buttocks, groin, back, wrist, leg, neck after a long ride. I began looking at alternative bikes after I torqued my lower back two years ago and couldn't ride my regular steeds. That's when I started looking at and test riding many recumbent bikes and trikes.

Most recumbent bikes have a high price tag. EZ, Bike E, Cruzbike recumbent bikes are the most affordable. Craigslist or Ebay is even more affordable.

EDIT: Added other weird looking human powered machines to this thread

One of those reasons is for sustainability for this planet and a basic feeling one person shouldn't have to make such an impact. Too Long, Didn't Read:
1) Register with Strava and log in.
2) Join the SDBikecommuter group on Strava.
3) Follow friends from this forum - don't be shy about it!

(Android, iPhone or GPS required)

-------

If you ride with a smartphone (iPhone, Android) or GPS (e.g., Garmin), please keep on reading! And if you don't feel free to read anyways, as it might be of interest anyways.

I have used various apps for navigation and recording rides. They are all a little different; some do certain things better than others, some have more or less functionality than others - as you would expect.

At the suggestion of Cecil, I recently started using Strava (free, no data (e.g., 3G) required, can run in background), and I am loving it! In addition to recording your rides and providing you with all kinds of ride statistics (time, speed, distance, elevation gains, energy burn, and much else), you can also (at your option!) choose to upload your ride to Strava servers, where you can share rides with other riders whon you have permitted to see your rides. In return, you can see and download their rides, and comment on them (think a Facebook for cyclists of sorts, but with solid privacy walls).

If you are into cycling for exercise, it also ranks you with other cyclists who have done the same route: Say, as part of your ride you went up Bachmann Place - this is a “Strava segment” so you can compare yourself to 1) other times you rode up Bachmann, and 2) to other riders who have done it. This goes for any other Strava segment - there must be millions of them in the database.

There are about half a dozen members here who I know are active Strava members. They are on my “friends” list (and I am on theirs). So I can see when and where they rode (If they chose to make it public) and comment on them. So if you decide to try out Strava, you will have some friends already, right out of the starting gates, from this board! And if you post to the “Mileage” thread, Strava can help keeping your stats straight (as long as you remember to turn it on).

Here’s a link to the Strava webpage. And here’s a link to myStrava page, to give you an idea of what an actual page looks like (very limited info available to guests -much more if you register and log in [just like FB]).

Strava may not be for everybody, but if one of your reasons for using a bike is exercise and to stay in touch with other cyclists in the local community (and who desn't?), you may want to check it out.

If you decide to do so, post to this post so we can add each other as “friends” if you like. If you are a Strava user already, post here, too - so we know who you are. And feel free to add your experiences with Strava, too.

For the record, I have no relations or associations with Strava - I am just a happy user.

Not being content with piling all ride reports and photo logs into the "Commute" or "Dally Photos" threads, I set up this thread for all to post their daily rides. With or without photos is fine - post here about any ride that was memorable to you and that you think other members might be interested in!

I'll start to get this thread going.

-----

Inspired by the "Where to Ride From Old Town" thread and Wiki article on bike routes up Mt. Soledad, I decided to revisit some of the off the beaten track scenery in my hilly "backyard" today. Here are some highlights. As is clear from the photos, the ride was blanketed in glorious fog - the view pictures will have to wait till next time! Click to zoom.

I started doing some small climbs at the southern slopes of Soledad just to warm up, then hit Bird Rock and entered in past the gate at the bottom of Corona. Continued onto Rancho, Rodeo, Mesa and the secret unpaved Solymar.

Then dropped downtown via Muirlands Dr., up Soledad Ave., and up past the two little known historic bridges to the south: It is steep here and the bridges were built so that the road could loop back above itself for a full circle "switchback":

To be continued in next post.
